Things Mommy Said/Says

Many have heard the phrase, "I brought you into this world and I'll take you out."  Maybe your mom or dad said it.  Maybe you remember when Bill Cosby said it to Theo in the clip below (one of my all time favorite episodes).

Today, after hearing a parent say that phrase to her misbehaving child I got to thinking about all the unintentionally funny things my mom said to me in my younger years... and now even.

Oh, how my mom loved to turn things into people or parts of people; it was usually my father and occasionally a cousin.  Her own grand form of personification.

Once when she saw me litter she said, "if you don't pick up your father's nose..."  I never littered again.

When I forgot to put my books away she said, "Gwei, come here and put your  father's backside in its place."  Didn't leave a book out for years.

When I would cry starvation in an attempt to get her to buy me outside food before we got home she'd ask, "are you really that hungry?"  "Yes," I'd reply.  "You'll be just fine.  You have enough adipose tissue to sustain you for decades."  The first time she said that I found my face in a dictionary reading about adipose tissue.  My mom had effectively played me.

"In histology, adipose tissue or body fat or fat depot or just fat is loose connective tissue composed of adipocytes. It is technically composed of roughly only 80% fat; fat in its solitary state exists in the liver and muscles. Adipose tissue is derived from lipoblasts. Its main role is to store energy in the form of lipids, although it also cushions and insulates the body."    - from Wikepedia

Mommy had a knack for playing me and fooling me too.  Every time she asked if I was really that hungry I would think when I said yes she was going to give in and get me a Happy Meal.  That never happened.  And every time she mentioned adipose tissue and made me wait to eat a home cooked meal I thought I was being punished.  Didn't know how good I had it...

When I would forget to close a door she'd ask, "did you mean to leave your father's mouth open?"

That woman is funny.

As a child I want was my favorite phrase.  Still is.  I want so many things...

Every time I would ask my mom for something if her answer was no I would say, "but I want it."  Her response was always, "lucky for you, you're old enough for your wants not to hurt."  Hmmm... I still don't know how I feel about that one.

Has your mother (or father or guardian) ever used any of these phrases?  Similar ones? Does she, he or your family have phrases that only they use?  Please share.

So What You're Only A Friend In My Head

I posted this link under the Acting tab the other day... considering my/our slight yet healthy obsession I'm going to post it here too.

My Aunty/Mentor/Friend in my head in the name of our Juilliard bond never disappoints.  Say It Like You Mean It is the name I'm giving Ms. Viola Davis this week and forever.

Watch her interview with Charlie Rose by CLICKING HERE.  It begins at the 20 minute mark.

In this interview she candidly stated, "My dream was to be somebody..." Aunty (in my head), you ARE definitely somebody!

'Tis The Season Finale

We have many reasons to be jolly; believe me the list is long.  Somewhere on that list is the fact that we completed season one of our love project without proper equipment, a real budget, plan or the amount of knowledge and know how we have now.  Who  knew this would be the project that inspired the start of our own production company...

Season two will be ALL THAT & THEN SOME!  It premieres on April 1, 2012. We cannot wait to share it with you... save the date.

Stay tuned to www.shittyfab.com for new video posts, behind the scenes footage and more.

Below is episode #6- WHAT THE WHAT, the season finale.  To watch episodes 1-5 by click here.

What's something you're jolly about?  Please share.

This Name Is Not A Mistake

an old favorite taken by CJC
what's in a word?  what's in name?

we are often asked about the title of this blog.  why shitty?  why not something else?

because something else wouldn't have been right.  shitty fit.  fabulous fit.  together the two words work and express exactly what we acknowledge about our existence on a daily basis.

if i say, " that's shitty, it's shitty, he or she treated me like a piece of shit, i stepped in shit, this taste like shit, i feel like shit..."  you get it, right?

sure, i do have an extensive vocabulary that my mother spent  a lot of money on but sometimes that vocabulary fails.  sometimes i need the descriptor of choice to sound as gritty, as base or as beautiful as the moment may feel.  when i feel like shit,  i feel like shit and no other word will work.

the way i look at it, saying i feel like shit is, by far, better than throwing an adult tantrum.  please remember use of the word adult is relative...

the fabulous part of the title  is never questioned.  never.

i get that.  everyone can imagine living a fabulous life all the time.  nobody wants to settle in the shit  and imagine a shitty life.  i get it.

but the plain truth IS that life IS shitty fabulous.  we don't always get what we want, things can change in an instant, for brief spans of time (when we think we are in control) we loose sight and may believe we have it all or don't have anything at all... there are ups and downs...

our choice of  the shitty fabulous moniker is a way of reminding ourselves, very quickly, that we are blessed.  does that make sense?  every time we fix our mouths to say something is shitty we are  immediately thrust into remembering that if something is shitty about a situation there is also something fabulous about it.

can you accept that?

we are committed to looking for the fabulous when the shitty shows its face.  there is a lot of shitty but the fabulous will always outweigh all of it.

we're frank here.  use of the word shitty is an extension of the frankness... that's all.

we see you shitty and we knock you back with fabulous.  that's what's in this name... a knock out.

want to get into the nitty gritty of the shitty fabulous philosophy click here.
